Clinical assessment in anaesthesia and critical care
Clinically there was no noticeable difference in the administration of an anaesthetic with oxygen from a concentrator compared to that from cylinders; but being a new concept it was psychologically difficult to believe that it was oxygen that was being delivered. An inline oxygen monitor relieved any anxiety and confirmed levels in excess of 93%. At lower flows (500 ml/min) this reached 99%. The noise level was low and similar to a fridge. The “Free-Ox” machine proved very mobile on wheels and therefore very portable to other areas within the clinic such as x-ray, ultrasound or to cages for critical care oxygen.
It is also easily transportable in the back of a car as the unit splits into two, and it can be used anywhere (even in the kitchen or barn!) where there is a mains electrical source.
