The Humphrey ADE-circle system
The Humphrey ADE-circle system has been developed over 20 years to provide a safe multipurpose system that offers the anaesthetist a choice of technique for all circumstances he may face.
Advantageous Features
All the advantages of existing alternatives are included. New concepts in anaesthesia have also been incorporated such as the new specially designed exhaust valve for paediatrics as well as adults. It has also been shown to be exceptionally efficient as it requires low fresh gas flows in all modes of use, lower than thought possible for spontaneous respiration. Being simple to operate, no specialist knowledge is required and its design was initially aimed at Third World hospitals where the author worked for 4 years. However its widespread acceptance in the UK has shown that its versatile qualities are valued in the most well equipped theatres. Hence its application has extended to all environments where safety, simplicity and cost-effectiveness are of paramount importance.
The ADE system was awarded a Shell Design Award in 1985 and an Engineering Design Award in 1999.
Two research prizes were awarded for the ADE project from the Royal Society of Medicine, London and from the South African Society of Anaesthetists.
